The two photos above illustrate the quality loss which can occur using the built-in AOL browser. America Online compresses images before they reach your computer to save on download time. This trick to reduce the load on their network distorts many web photos and can cause the glitch seen on the right with certain types of images (e.g. Photoshop JPEGs with image previews attached). The compression feature is turned on for you by default, but you can turn it off! To do this you make sure you are not signed on as a guest, then go to the toolbar to "Members" and select "my aol." Then find the "web" preferences and un-check the "use compressed graphics" feature. To make sure the effect takes place immediately, also select "empty cache" which will make the browser download fresh graphics next time you go to the web. There may be differences in this problem and how to correct it in various versions of AOL's software.
